Miryuk Onggi
The Boseong Mireok Onggi family has preserved its lineage for nine generations and is currently preparing for the continuation into the tenth generation.
The workshop is presently led by Master Lee Hak-su, a designated holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage (formerly Important Intangible Cultural Property) for onggi craftsmanship.
He carries on the legacy of his father, Master Lee Ok-dong, maintaining traditional methods as the ninth-generation successor.
The family tradition began approximately 300 years ago in Gangjin, later relocating to Boseong during the seventh generation, where it established what is now known as Mireok Onggi.
Master Lee Hak-su, the current ninth-generation artisan, has been recognized as a holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage for onggi, following his designation as a Jeollanam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage holder.
His children—particularly his youngest son, Lee Re—are actively participating in the production process, continuing the family tradition and preparing to carry it into the tenth generation.
Mireok Onggi is especially renowned for preserving traditional techniques, including the use of natural medicinal clay mixed with wood ash glaze and firing in a traditional tunnel kiln at temperatures exceeding 1,200°C.
