질그릇

옹기의 종류를 구분하는데 있어서 질그릇은 유약(잿물)을 바르지 않고 구운 그릇을 칭한다. 옹기의 종류 중에서는 가장 오랜 역사를 지녔다.

질그릇의 ‘질’은 흙을 뜻하는 우리말로 현재는 토기와 도기를 총칭하는 말로도 사용된다.

질그릇은 1000℃ 내외에서 구운 그릇으로 800℃까지 가마 온도를 올린 뒤 생소나무 가지 등을 넣고, 가마의 입구를 막아 소나무 연기가 그릇의 표면에 스며든 검회색 옹기를 말한다

 질 독은 숨을 많이 쉬고 습도조절 및 정화작용이 뛰어나 밥통, 시루, 화분 등으로 많이 사용되었다.

또한 질그릇은 이른 시기에 제작된 연질도기와 삼국시대 이후 제작된 경질도기로 구분된다.

유약을 사용하지 않았기 때문에 기벽에 기공이 막히지 않아서 공기의 순환이 비교적 원활하여 질그릇에 물을 담으면 상하지 않고 장기간 보관할 수 있었다.

삼국시대에는 부장 용품으로 다양한 인물이나 동물 형태의 도기들도 출토되었으며, 고려시대와 조선시대 곡식을 보관하는 항아리, 화로, 화분 등 다양한 생활용품으로 제작되어 사용되기도 하였다.

Jilgreut (Jil Pottery)

Earthenware, in the classification of onggi (traditional Korean pottery), refers to vessels that are fired without the application of glaze (ash coating).

Among the various types of onggi, it has the longest history.

The word “jil” in jilgeureut means “soil” in Korean, and today it is also used as a general term encompassing both earthenware and stoneware.

Earthenware is typically fired at around 1,000°C. After raising the kiln temperature to approximately 800°C, fresh pine branches are added and the kiln entrance is sealed,

 allowing pine smoke to permeate the surface of the vessels, resulting in a dark gray finish.

Earthen jars are highly breathable, offering excellent humidity control and purification properties.

For this reason, they have been widely used for items such as rice containers, steamers, and flower pots.

In addition, earthenware can be divided into early soft earthenware and later hard earthenware produced after the Three Kingdoms period.

Because no glaze is applied, the pores in the vessel walls remain open, enabling smooth air circulation. As a result, water stored in earthenware does not spoil easily and can be preserved for long periods.

During the Three Kingdoms period, various pottery items in the shapes of human figures and animals were also produced as burial goods.

In the Goryeo and Joseon periods, earthenware continued to be widely used in everyday life, taking forms such as storage jars for grains, braziers, and flower pots.
