지석
지석은 봉분 앞에 세워두는 비석과 달리, 무덤 안에 묻어 봉분이나 묘비가 유실되더라도 유족들이 조상을 찾아낼 수 있도록 제작된 도판(陶板)이나 판석을 말한다.
지석에는 고인의 성명, 관향(출신지), 가족관계, 이력, 덕망, 생몰 연월일, 묘지 소재 및 방향 등의 내용이 기록되어 고인의 생애를 기린다.
도자기 역사의 연대를 밝히는 중요한 자료로도 사용된다.
Ji-seok (Tomb Tablet Pottery)
A jiseok is a ceramic or stone tablet buried inside a tomb, unlike a stele erected in front of a burial mound. It was created so that descendants could locate the grave even if the mound or gravestone were lost over time.
Inscriptions on a jiseok typically include the deceased’s name, place of origin, family relationships, life history, virtues, dates of birth and death, as well as the location and orientation of the grave. Through these records, the life and legacy of the deceased are commemorated.
Jiseok also serve as important historical materials for establishing the chronology of ceramic history.
